So, who is most responsible for kids doing well in schools?

Parents.

That's the overwhelming response to the first poll of our "Are Palm Beach County Parents Making the Grade?" issue.

Seventy percent of respondents in the poll said parents are most responsible. Twenty percent said students are responsible. Another 7.5 percent said teachers were responsible. And 2.5 percent said others were responsible.

The responses are in line with American attitudes toward parental involvement in education: 86% of the general public believes that support from parents is the most important way to improve the schools (Rose, Gallup, & Elam, 1997).

Another research finding: The more intensely parents are involved, the more beneficial the achievement effects. (Cotton, K. Wikelund, K., Northwest Regional Education Laboratory, School Improvement Research Series)
