Are Palm Beach County Schools Making the Grade?
Ask people what they think of Palm Beach County schools, and, chances are, you will get many different responses.
On one hand, we are doing well. Many local students are going off to the nation's best universities on scholarships. Several high schools routinely rank high on national lists of top-performing public schools.
On the other hand, we are struggling. About 20 percent of students aren't graduating from high school. Close to a half-dozen public schools have failing grades on state accountability reports.
In the education system, there's lots of ways to measure school performance.
One is FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) scores. Another is end-of-course exams such as Algebra 1. And yet another is Advanced Placement tests.
Results on these vary from year to year.
